Yujia Gu is a graduate student here at Long Beach and is working towards her Masters in Fine Arts. Her main focus as a third year student in the MFA program is graphic design. Yujia earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design at China Women’s University in 2014. After getting her degree, she was inspired to go out and explore new things so she decided to come study in the US.
Yujia’s exhibit focused on gun violence includes mass shootings, comparisons of gun violence among different countries, the number of children killed by guns since Newton and much more. In her exhibit, there is an info-graphic map used to point out the places where gun violence happened during the last 72 hours in the U.S. There is also a LED display which shows the number of people who are shot every day. All of Yujia’s work in this exhibit is meant to emotionally invest the people that stop by her exhibit.
Yujia’s purpose of her exhibit was to make people realize how serious the gun violence is in this country. She said that lots of gun violence happens in our daily lives and people do not realize it. After having done some research, she found out that schools and business buildings are places where people are most active and they are the most at risk of getting gun violence. Therefore, she wanted to give viewers a clear presentation and inform them about the gun violence happening around us. She would also like to encourage people to understand that it is necessary to learn how to properly use guns and have gun control. Yujia truly believes that our society will be better with one little action from each person.
After the recent shooting in San Bernardino, this exhibit was the one that caught most of my attention. I believe that most people don’t really pay attention to gun violence until there is a tragic event. Therefore, I thought that this exhibit was worth stoping at and actually admiring the message behind it. I, myself, was not really informed of all the shootings that this country has faced so this exhibit was very eyeopening. What I enjoyed the most about this exhibit was the emotional connection that I was able to experience. I felt really devastated when I was taking in all the information but then again I was glad that all of this information was being shared. Overall, I thought that Yujia’s exhibit was really amazing because it was able to raise awareness on gun violence.
